Tendinitis is inflammation of the thick fibrous cords that attach muscle to bone. These cords are called tendons. The condition causes pain and tenderness just outside a joint.

Tendinitis can occur in any tendon. But it’s most common around shoulders, elbows, wrists, knees and heels.

Most tendinitis can be treated with rest, physical therapy and medicine to reduce pain. Long-lasting tendon inflammation can cause a tendon to tear. A torn tendon might need surgery.

Overcoming achilles tendonitis

It’s important to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and personalized treatment plan. Use the Call Back Request form to arrange an appointment

Here are some suggestions:

  1. Rest and avoid overuse: Give your affected tendon time to heal by avoiding activities that exacerbate the pain. This may involve modifying your exercise routine or finding alternative ways to perform daily tasks that don’t strain the tendon.
  2. Apply ice: Applying ice to the affected area for about 15-20 minutes several times a day can help reduce inflammation and alleviate pain. Remember to wrap the ice pack in a towel to protect your skin.
  3. Use compression and elevation: Wearing a compression bandage or brace can provide support and reduce swelling. Elevating the affected limb above the level of your heart whenever possible can also help reduce inflammation.
  4. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs): Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or naproxen can help reduce pain and inflammation. However, it’s best to consult with a healthcare professional before taking any medication to ensure it’s safe for you and won’t interact with any other medications you may be taking.
  5. Physical therapy: Working with a physical therapist can be beneficial for tendonitis. They can guide you through exercises and stretches to strengthen the affected tendon and surrounding muscles, improving flexibility and reducing pain.
  6. Heat therapy: Some individuals find relief from using heat therapy, such as warm towels, heating pads, or warm baths. Heat can help relax the muscles and promote blood circulation to the affected area. However, avoid using heat if there is active inflammation or swelling.
  7. Modify your workspace and habits: If your tendonitis is related to repetitive strain or poor ergonomics, consider making changes to your workspace and daily habits. Ensure your workstation is set up ergonomically and take regular breaks to avoid prolonged periods of repetitive motion.
  8. Supportive footwear and custom weight bearing orthotics: Wearing proper footwear with custom weight bearing orthotics can help reduce strain on your tendons. Talk to Neil and the team at The Foot Alignment Clinic.
